The Simplicity of John’s Writing

1 John 1:5-10 (ESV) This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

In the Kingdom of God things are always light. There is never gray or black. It is always light. I love this simplicity. John more than most, writes with this kind of clarity, the clarity of either or. If you claim to walk in the light of fellowship in and with the Lord Jesus, but you are in the darkness, then you simply are lying. If we are walking in the light as Jesus is in the light then we have fellowship with each other and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. What rich, clear and wonderful simplicity. Walking in the light as Jesus is in the light becomes the true standard of our lives before the Lord Jesus. Since there is no darkness in him at all, to walk with him in the light is to have genuine fellowship with him and with each other as well. If, however we do not walk genuinely in the light as Jesus is in the light then we are lying and indeed are not in fellowship with each other as well.

Thank You Lord Jesus, The Great “I AM”!

John 18:2-6 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. ESV

This passage has always amazed me and now so very much even comforts me. Let me explain.

This is the night in which the Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed. Jesus has been in prayer, seeking his Heavenly Father and was now prepared, for the following events of this night and the next day.
